Harbir emigrates from the Punjab in 1945 to New York City where he establishes a three-bakery "empire." As Harbir grows into an American, living the American dream, taking pride in a son and grandson, all families are affected by a breakthrough in the realistically close future. With a small team, J-P Durand, a French biochemist obsessed with biblical ages, tracks down a plant that extends human life to that of Methusaleh.

As the world adjusts to dramatic changes in technology and values, the traditions of family become irrelevant. In 2059, Harbir is gone, but at age 71, with hundreds of years of life remaining, Harbir's son Yusuf has to deal with the relationship of happiness, lifespan, and family.
