Muskeg tells the story of Hazel and Theda, whose love is interrupted by a raid on a Savannah, Georgia speakeasy in 1922. Hazel avoids prosecution by moving to Minneapolis, then makes her way to a remote island on the Minnesota-Canadian border. By 1937, Hazel is running a fishing resort there with her new love, Minnie, when Theda shows up with her son, running from Albert, whom her family forced her to marry. Albert has hired detectives to help take the son and institutionalize Theda as a deviant. Hazel gathers a quirky group of border residents who hide Theda and her son in a forest ghost town and defend them. Seeing Theda for the first time in fifteen years, Hazel must choose between the passion of her first love and the stability and richness of her island life with Minnie.
