This was my attempt to find a path or purpose in a world that I couldn't make sense of. A documentation of audacious choices that I once hoped would lead me to some kind of dissentient promised land. It's a weird-ass narrative about invigorating highs, debilitating lows, defiance and disorientation. My high school principal had this to say about it - If you want an honest, hilarious, terrifying, unadorned and well written look into what it was like growing up in the late '90's to early aughts, in New Mexico, (at least from one perspective) buy Makeshift Manifesto by Christopher Merlyn. I read it all last night in one sitting and it brought tears to my eyes and reminded me why I loved my students so goddamned much and why they simultaneously inspired and terrified me. Highly recommended.
