Seth Tabor purchases land from Coy Bryant and settles on Big Creek with a view of where the creek joins the Buffalo River. The hickory trees that grow on the bench land prove perfect for his trade of making handles for farm tools.

While preparing to cut a tree, he notices something strange going on at the Bryant barn below the bluff. It looks like a meeting that shouldn't be happening. Whatever it is, isn't his business, but when his work is interrupted by two shotgun blasts, he focuses more on the land below. A horseman, who must have been hidden inside the barn, rides away in a hurry, however, Seth is too far away to see his face. He decides to keep his distance when finally, a crowd starts to gather and he watches the town folks put two bodies in the back of a wagon.

He turns to his friend Willie Sutton with his secret, but doesn't reveal everything he knows. In trying to find more answers, Seth decides to go to church at Cozy to see if he can hear any scuttlebutt. He is unprepared when he meets the beautiful redhead Melissa Bryant, who he gives his condolences for losing her uncle in the shooting.

Melissa captures his heart and their relationship grows, but questions of what he saw that day, and his search for answers continue to haunt Seth. Will he ever know the truth? Will he tell Willie or the sheriff what he's been keeping to himself?
