Can Kernel Earl successfully teach this trio of young squirrels to survive in the world of humans? He weighs the dangers and opportunities versus the uncontrolled energy of youth. Facing retirement, he does not want failure to be the final entry on his record. Kernel Earl only has a few days to train these three siblings as survivalists. The pressure and responsibility are on. Therefore, when the boys get into an argument, the Kernel gets angry and reminds them, brothers should be kind to each other. They do not learn from a single experience.Trouble again brews when Thumper, the most aggressive, ventures off on his own. The Kernel panics, and so upon Thumper's return, he strongly lectures all three on the terrible things that can happen to careless squirrels. Throughout the story, the siblings are exposed to situations that require caution, quick action, and an awareness of which young squirrels (and children) must adapt.Training a good "S.P." (Special Person) results in discovering techniques to charm and conquer loyalty by giving and withholding attention. The siblings' adventures are fraught with dangers, mishaps, and lessons finally learned. Despite the Kernel's best efforts, at graduation only one receives the Blue Jay feather of Survivalist. One receives a provisional feather and the other fails. At the reunion, the Kernel proudly observes Hoppy's arrival with a baby. Then a clumsy, impulsive Thumper arrives. Anxiously, the Kernel waits for Wee Bit. Of the three, he expected her to survive. He can wait no longer and sadly starts down the tree. Suddenly, the trees are alive with sounds. His eyes cloud as an untidy Wee Bit arrives, ushering in her three babies. As the ceremony begins, the Kernel notices that Hoppy's Black Bird feather, indicating the provisional status of Survivalist, is missing. Earl calls him forward and awards him the ultimate Blue Jay feather. To Thumper, who had failed, Earl explains that "tough love" paid off. Sometimes failure is the path to success. Thumper has survived and thus receives the coveted Blue Jay feather.
