It is the early 1950s in Manchester, England. Flo and Alice, now in their late 30s have been best friends since their late 'teens' Former employers of Flo, who own a Guest House on the south side of Manchester, are about to embark on a four-week cruise, when their housekeeper and her husband are run over by a bus, resulting in a broken leg apiece and all the passengers getting home late for their tea.
