Getting a diagnosis of HIV is bad enough, but even worse if you know you have no risk factors. At the start of Lenti, we meet a young man deliberately, but unknowingly, infected with HIV. As more cases occur, Inspector Bill Painter is sent to investigate. Painter is an old-school policeman with a love of jazz and a belief in police procedure. He is not comfortable working with women, but has a female superior officer and now a new female Sergeant both of whom, unlike him, are university graduates. Painter is married, but distracted by recurring doubts about a recent brief affair. Guilt occupies his thoughts as he tries to work out when, why and by whom the crime was committed.
