In his 82 years of the planet Bill Marantz has worn many hats, costumes and disguises, including a barrister's gown and judges robes. While going through the motions of practicing law and sitting on the bench (part time) the author of this memoir (aka diary) was moonlighting as a movie critic, freelance broadcaster, actor, radio and television writer and novelist. None of which turned out the be the road to fame or fortune. Tom Cochrane's life may have been a highway but Bill Marantz's journey was a series of dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs. In 1975, at the age of 40, the "recovering lawyer" belatedly ventured up a a garden path ordinarily trod by teenage girls. He began to keep a diary. Not just a record of his daily grind, or mid-life crises, but thoughts, observations and insights on life, art, literature, and the era into which he had been born. For roughly fifteen years Bill Marantz faithfully devoted virtually all of his spare time (which was abundant) to the care and feeding of his journal. Then, at the age of 55, he abandoned his journal-keeping as abruptly as he had begun. Another love affair was over. For over 25 years the 21 hardcover volumes sat in the bottom drawer of Bill's filing cabinet, like Mr. Rochester's mad wife in the attic. But the author wasn't getting any younger. It was a case of publish before you perish. Why should anyone bother reading the (partial) life story of an obscure stranger? Well, truth isn't always stranger than fiction but real people are invariably more complex than fictional characters. The most mundane life is a mystery. Or, if you prefer, a suspense story. Signs of Life (The Confessions of a Recovering Lawyer) is more nourising than a box of chocolates. This is the second of three volumes.
