Despite rebelling against optimism, expectations and traditions, Billie Robinson is about to get a rough lesson in fate and derailment. In The End of Everything Else magic is a character but not the star and Billie must find her way through adolescence, first love, and the acknowledgment that, sometimes, life is going to be messy whether you want it to be or not. Billie doesn't care. She loves her best friend and she loves her drugs, but other than that Billie has learned to adopt a laissez-faire attitude. She is a Descendant, a race of witches who have the power to control the elements as well as other things, however, due to circumstances beyond her control and understanding, her powers have not been developed as they should have been and as she would have liked. She's hoping that her Guardian will change all that, but the idea of being tied to a morally righteous angel for the rest of her life makes her less than excited meet her/him. Then there was the fire drill. The fire drill that had Billie avoiding her on again off again boyfriend while simultaneously trying to find her best friend, Tori. The fire drill that had her running smack dab into a blast from her past in the form of Caleb Young: rock star football player, known philanderer, the object of an amputation that she had gone through many years before. Suddenly he's everywhere, including her head, and Billie struggles to reconcile with what this weird attraction means. When a secret is revealed, and another one uncovered, Billie is left to navigate through her new reality, her new normal. And when the dust settles, she must confront the way she's been dealing with her life and the people in it.
