Places I Have Been are just that. Think of it as a geography of the spirit, the mind, of memories. The physical places I have written about are real and you can see them yourself should you go to visit each one. The abstract places are just as real to me and my presence has been in each of those places as well. Thus, this collection is my own personal cartography. Writing this book has been like the construction of one of those old stone walls you see in various parts of the world. Each stone placed just so, stacked one upon the other, exact to a certain height and linear as long as it is needed and functional. No mortar required or used, only the fit of stones against each other as a guide. There are 11, 971 words in this book. I know because I counted them. Each and every word was chosen carefully, picked up and turned over in my hands to feel their weight, to see see how they would be placed. Some were placed and then looked at with critical eyes, removed and discarded or rearranged. The end result of my wall of words is pleasing to me and I hope, pleasing to you.
