He was referring to the Ambarvalia, an official "dies ferialis," or "ferial day," on which heads of households throughout the Roman Empire performed the ritual, which was held in what is now late May. In "Ferial Day," an alternate history set in Victorian ancient Rome, scholar Marcus Laelius, wracked by the prospect of this mandated but grisly civic duty, contends with a wife who might abhor him, a discovery that could kill him, and some unlikely spiritual heirs of a dead rebel.
