The book studies the role of religious syncretism in the social and religious life of Muslim-Christian communities in the Western Rhodopes. The author places emphasis on analysing the symbolic dimension and the cultural function of syncretism in order to determine whether it helps to integrate the two religious groups, or is perhaps a kind of pretence obscuring their underlying isolationist and anti-syncretic tendencies.
