Teaching Economics From a Learner-Centered Perspective

The quest to reform America's education system has been at the forefront of educators', policymakers' and researchers' efforts since 1983s Nation at Risk. Both educators and researchers have realized that educational practices need to be completely transformed and that a research-based framework should guide their reform efforts. One area where educational practices need to be completely transformed is in the teaching of economics. In recent years, the quality of economics instruction has received consistently poor reviews by undergraduate students across the United States. The writing of this book's work is based on evidence that suggests that motivation, learning, and achievement are highly enhanced where learner- centered principles and practices are in place. The purpose of this book is to explore the use of learner-centered teaching (LCT) in the teaching of an introductory economics class. The study showed that if a teacher is able to build a nurturing and caring classroom environment, students would reciprocate by working hard and taking responsibility for their learning.
