This work is concerned with Iris Murdoch's four novels: The Sea the Sea, A Word Child, The Bell and Under the Net. The most extensive chapter of this work deals the concept of an uprooted individual, which is present in her every novel. Here, we speak about 'an uprooted individual', a post modern human being, living outside of the traditional social forms, such as family. These traditional forms have been subverted in the western world and underwent a period of decay. On the one hand, we have acquired 'freedom'. On the other hand, living outside of these traditional forms has triggered a crisis of identity - this is exactly Murdoch's scope of interest.
