Born around 1908 in Bafilo, Essoh Irate? Zakari was the son of Bangna Kpara Tchakoura, known as Essoh-Tew?, and Bida? Ali Gbana of the Wadi clan. He lost both his parents at an early age and was raised by his paternal uncle, Bangna Ali Abant?, Superior Chief of Bafilo from 1918 to 1963. The latter died in 1963, after a 45-year reign, and the regency was entrusted to his nephew Essoh Irate? Zakari. It was during this regency that he made a name for himself as a dynamic, outspoken man. He held the position of Regent until 1966, when Chief Nassam Sa?bou Toma was appointed to the supreme throne. This new Chief was called to God on February 7, 1973, after seven years of reign. At the end of the regency period, Essoh Irate? Zakari was elected Superior Chief of Bafilo on May 1, 1975, following an election presided over by Head of State Gnassingb? Eyad?ma. He reigned for 24 years, from 1975 to 1999, under the name Ouro-Koura Essoh Irate? Zakari. He died on the evening of June 5, 1999, at the age of 91.
