Suuressa perheessä rahat riittävät hädin tuskin ruokaan, mutta isällä ja pojalla on unelma: tuvan kattoon on saatava kirkas lamppu. Markkinatorilta löytyykin niin upea lamppu, että naapuritalon isäntä tahtoisi ostaa sen omakseen. Suutari ei kuitenkaan halua luovuttaa, sillä yhä sairaammaksi käyvä Arvi tarvitsee lampun valoa jaksaakseen kesään. Raskaan talven jälkeen isä ja poika pääsevät jälleen yhdessä ongelle auringonpaisteeseen.
