Troubled by a murky past, arsonist "Professor" Carrion arrives in a gloomy, isolated old town that always rains to defy the Fates and search for answers - especially about the hourglass marking his hand. His seemingly jolly coachman, Winston, however, is much more concerned with the delicate business of saving his soul.

Joined by Constable Brauer, an aging drunkard who desperately wants to escape his wife, the pair set out to help an old, tricorn-hat-sporting polygamist, soon realizing a nefarious secret society has its clutches on everything and everyone. As the conspiracy unravels, and the rain ceases, death arrives, forcing them to consider one question:
