Gambia, Africa, 1502. One day a mysterious shimmering is discovered by a bunch of slave traders that creates a portal that allows all those who walk through it to emerge instantaneously on the other side of the portal, which is in what will eventually become South Carolina in North America. This point of divergence from the original timeline creates an alternate history where the many centuries of the triangular slave trade, the middle passage as it was called, where millions of slaves were sent across the Atlantic from Africa to be enslaved in the New World, where millions of people died on the voyage over, and where the survivors were subjected to brutal slavery, is now an even worse and more insidious system. This divergent alternate history of the world showed that because of this shortcut across the Atlantic, called The Devil's Portal by abolitionists, that allows slaves to be transported instantaneously, it leads to an expansion of the system of slavery and effects the balance of power in the world as various nations and empires compete to have sole access to this shortcut in time and space. This is an alternate history of the slave trade and how one little glitch in time and space like that can make one of the greatest tragedies in our history so much more tragic and drastically alter the history of the world for generations to come in an alternate history spanning over five centuries of history.
