When Vivian and her husband move to his hometown and buy a ramshackle mansion, she wants to settle into the quiet community and start a family, but fate intervenes, and she is widowed. A group of men who are members of a strange militia takes over the restoration of her home led by local garage owner Graham Duncan. He is tall, knowledgeable, and self-confident, always with a kind word for her and a twinkle in his eye. Still, she has contempt for this leader of a right-wing militia. When, after another murder, he sent men with guns to protect her, she felt like a rebellious teen who had been ordered to stay in her room. She now knows Graham and a cohort of cousins run the town.
