Cut it short: DIY early retirement plan

This book is addressed to busy professionals who should consider early retirement. With successful careers, they hardly have any time to even contemplate the idea because it is a momentous decision that requires careful consideration and planning. This book offers a shortcut to prepatory research by laying out a mental framework for the design of an early retirement.

A decision to retire early should be based on a reasonably well thought-out plan. Because it is so important, it behooves the prospective retiree to design their own plan. The task cannot be outsourced. An intelligent person would know better than to offload the responsibilty and trust someone else for that. This book does not offer financial advice, or a pre-packaged solution. It introduces ideas that organize the design of an early retirement plan.

The book is divided into three topics: finance, health, and purpose. In finance, we consider the realities of seucring money matters. Early retirement means that we have to contend with a period spanning half a century; that means the distinct possibility that the world would be engulfed in various large scale devastation events. In health, again, we consider what can be done over the long term. Finally, we explore why we should contemplate retirement in the first place: bluntly, given limited time, we each have to find meaning in life.

The author, after a charmed life in corporate R&D, retired early in 2019 near his actuarial mid-life. For illustrative purposes, we finish with his example.
