The year is 2022. Cancer has been eradicated for sixty years due to a wonder drug called cansol. The source of its active ingredient is unknown, but it's cheap, so no-one cares.
But cansol is made from the tears of a teenage girl called Lola. To be effective, they must be produced through trauma. Mariela, her grandmother, traumatises Lola every night by making her watch Telecasts of earlier-inflicted traumas.
But the traumas she inflicts on Lola are nothing compared with those she inflicts on her daughter, Odette whom she keeps holed up in her basement after transferring her 'gift' to Lola.
The world knows nothing about Odette and Lola; Mariela keeps them secret because she fears her empire will be shut down. But when her secret gets out, the world must make a choice.
When Mariela is murdered, police fight against time to find the perpetrator before Mariela becomes a martyr.
The novel ends in the year 2040. The world is a different place. Cancer is killing millions, and medical science is defenceless. In this context, Mariela's choices are seen through a very different lens.
