We cannot escape the uncomfortable truth that most human interactions involve power imbalances. These interactions often fail or succeed based on how power is managed. Parenting, for example, has to rely on authority-not entirely, but mostly. The same is true of work organizations, transnational peacekeeping missions, and patient care in the psychiatric asylum. In a wide array of seemingly different settings, anxiety, fear, and antagonism need to be managed by parents, administrators, leaders, and asylum clinicians-wherever authority is exerted over others who are relatively disempowered or even captive. This book is about winning hearts and minds, using the crucible of the psychiatric asylum as an instructive experience.

How do we help those who are anxious, fearful, and angry move away from antagonism and instead choose a collaborative alliance?
