"Blood at the Root" is a thriller written by Kimberly Y. Peters, inspired by the song lyrics "Strange Fruit" sung by Billie Holiday and covered by Nina Simone. Strange fruit is a metaphor for the dead bodies of the enslaved Africans hung and murdered from southern trees. This screenplay tells the story of how the descendants of Osarius' family met the ancestors while both seeking freedom. The main character, Greg (played by fellow writer, Kyle Reasor) alongside his wife Essence (played by actress Krystyn Spratt) inherit a property--simple enough. Only to find there were some important details left out. Creating a maze for them and those once enslaved. There is a struggle in transitioning. The once enslaved imprisoned again, but this time, by their own perceptions. This table read was facilitated by creative, Rita Cofield, as she helped fine tune this cinematic body of work.
