In mid-January 1865, the Galvanized Yankees were escorted from Camp Douglas to Camp Fry for training. Buck is ordered to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where his troop receives further orders to escort a General's daughter to her husband's post at Fort Kirby along the Smoky Hill Trail. What begins as a routine escort soon becomes a struggle for survival along the most dangerous route from Atchison, Kansas, to Denver, Colorado.
