Sam Drake was the proud owner of The Royal Hotel. He hired Renee as the Development Director, later they married and had two sons Thomas and Steven. Sam dreamed of the day when he and his boys would run the business together. But with Sam's sudden tragic death, Thomas, their oldest son struggled greatly and he developed some memory loss at the age of fifteen.

Renee is now a widow with two teenage boys and a hotel to run. Renee handled things the best way she could. She believed that when Thomas got over the shock of his father's death his memory would return. And so they never spoke of his death again. Thomas doesn't remember his life growing up. But now he has his own family. His oldest daughter, Alana, at fifteen started hearing voices, she stabbed her mother several time in the ribs. The ambulance took her to the hospital and they determined she was having a Schizophrenia episode. Thomas who was a newly appointed Judge, at the tine, he was willing to do anything to keep his name and reputation intact. Even at the expense of his own family suffering for his Judgeship. Thomas made all the decision in his family and decided to have Alana put away until she was better. Mary, his wife, felt empty with Alana gone and she told Thomas she wanted another child. Thomas told her he would never let anyone or anything ruin his Judgeship and he would only agree if she promised to never mention Alana's name again. And so, they had another daughter, named Sarah.
