INSIDE HISTORY BONUS

Paul Knowles, who was born in Orlando, Florida, on April 25, 1946, had a difficult upbringing and was placed in foster care for a large portion of his youth. His legal issues started early, and by the time he was 19, he was a prisoner in Florida's Raiford Prison.

In early 1974, while incarcerated, Knowles began writing to a San Francisco-based divorcee named Angela Covic. Their romance developed swiftly, and in advance of Knowles's release, Covic even paid for his legal defense. Nevertheless, after being set free, Knowles hurried to California, only to have his dreams crushed when Covic called off their engagement. Covic then said that Knowles had an uncomfortable "aura of fear" that made her uneasy.
