Alice and her friends travel to America on their gap year. While her friends just want to party, Alice is there to see her favorite motivational speaker, Lauren Fitzgerald, author of the best-selling book, How Not to Be a Victim.

After surviving a brush with death, Lauren helps people who have undergone traumatic, dangerous incidents reclaim control of their lives. If Lauren has helped thousands already, surely she could help Alice overcome her demons?

Abandoned by her friends, Alice finds herself alone in Lauren's home-town and stumbles upon a video recording of a missing hiker.

The locals' theories are plentiful: human trafficking, alien abduction, and serial killers, among others. As she investigates further, she discovers a disproportionate number of people go missing in the area.

Alice reaches out to Lauren and together, they decide to retrace the route of the missing hiker in the hope of finding the truth.

As they head off into the Mojave Desert, Alice worries her quest to overcome her fear, may result in her becoming the perfect victim, as threats even more sinister than her dark past lurk out in the desert.
