But then the United States joined her Allies across the ocean to fight the German Axis Powers in France. As Anna's male colleagues and friends scrambled to learn "soldiering", those left at home learned to adapt to their absence. Some absences would be temporary, others permanent.

By the time the Armistice was signed in 1918, the United States was dealing with the Spanish Influenza epidemic. Anna has to decide between financial independence in the city or the tug of family responsibility. She learns war is not always fought by uniformed soldiers using guns and bombs
