In the 1930s, Dick Meadows grew up in poverty, on tenant farms with no electricity or indoor plumbing, as his parents eked out a living. The eldest of eight siblings, he was expected to hunt, trap, butcher, and perform the duties of a farmhand while enduring the abuse of his father, a man he couldn't please.
As a teenager, he tried a brief stint working on drilling rigs in the oil fields. Then, at seventeen, determined to leave, he talked his mother into signing papers so he could join the Marines. After boot camp and combat training, he shipped out to Korea, where he learned how to clear minefields and stay alive.
He discovered his love of theater while attending school on the GI Bill, which led to him finding work off-Broadway in New York City. After leaving New York, he became a drama professor, teaching in schools in the Midwest and enjoying a long career directing plays in community theaters. From Farms to Footlights is his story of overcoming obstacles and abuse-and finding his passion.| Author: Richard Meadows |
