Fannie Beers was a northern lady who married a Southern student and moved to New Orleans. Her husband joined the Crescent Rifles when Louisiana seceded, and Fannie served as a nurse in Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia, where she earned the sobriquet "The Florence Nightingale of the South." She published her memoirs in 1889.
