It is proposed to begin this book with a faithful account of the habits and customs of the inmates of a village house in a tropical climate. To give a clear idea of the actual life of the people, it will be necessary to describe carefully a selected typical house. All the dwellings in a village are built in the same way; and though there are serious disadvantages in the method of construction, the houses are precisely adapted to the needs of those who have to live in a hot country.
