Based at the time of the 1st world war, in rural Aberdeen-shire, our story tells on our hero's inability to deal with grief after the death of his beautiful young wife. Filled with remorse he joins the army to get way from the familiarity that reminds him of his beloved wife. Doing this only irritates his jilted and embittered sister-in-law who then pursues his younger brother with a view to depriving him of his family inheritance while he serves in France.
