Based at the time of the 1st world war, in rural Aberdeen-shire, our story tells on our hero's inability to deal with grief after the death of his beautiful young wife. Filled with remorse he joins the army to get way from the familiarity that reminds him of his beloved wife. Doing this only irritates his jilted and embittered sister-in-law who then pursues his younger brother with a view to depriving him of his family inheritance while he serves in France. Later on in the story tells of a time later in life when our hero is in the merchant navy along with his wartime friend. While docked in a South American country ruled by a dictator who bases himself on the rising Adolf Hitler in Europe.
Charged with a crime they did not commit the find themselves they are sent to a penitentiary which id base in the middle of the Amazon rain-forest where escape seems futile as they are surrounded by 50 miles of rain-forest in every direction.
