Melissa, a beautiful young woman born blind to an aristocratic family, has spent her life sheltered by her overprotective parents, Lawrence and Gloria. Their love for her threatens to suffocate her, and pays no attention to her ambitions and desires. Despite her passion for music and dreams of joining the New York Philharmonic Society, her parents plan for her to marry Patrick, a promiscuous and tyrannical Union Army soldier from an aristocratic family. They arrange the marriage without her consent, treating her as a mere prize for Patrick. As Melissa resigns herself to this fate, she meets Timothy, a skilled African American musician who understands her ambitions, and shares her goals of being a recognized voice in music. They decide to join forces to achieve their musical goals by helping Melissa develop her musical talents. Their growing relationship soon evolves into love, but it provokes outrage from her family, her fianc?, and society, leading to acts of racial hatred as they challenge the status quo.
