My Home Is Gone: Refugee women tell their stories

The experiences of women who become refugees are very different from those of men. Like men, women flee their homes because of war and conflict, but also because their rights as women are violated - by their governments, their societies, even their next of kin. Fleeing is dangerous, arduous and exhausting, as is the entire process of building a new life. Women on the run are confronted with a multitude of risks and dangers. Especially when they have no money and are traveling alone. A shockingly high number of refugee women are exposed to abuse and gender-based violence.

They are young mothers, widows, hopeful teenagers, grandmothers, students, transsexual women, women who were used to commanding servants, illiterate women, sex slaves, women who gave birth to children in refugee camps, women who are finding their way back to life after traumatizing experiences. Sad women, wounded women, women with big hearts and, despite everything, an even bigger desire to survive, adapt and look to the future.

This book records the stories of women who have fled from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Cameroon, Ukraine and East Turkestan (Xinjiang). Through their stories, these women are given a face and rise above the mere numbers we often see them as. What they have in common is the hope of a life in safety and freedom, with rights that they believe should also apply to them as women.
