In a moment of desperation, Mason found himself standing before the gaping maw of a sewer entrance. It loomed like a dark, inviting abyss, whispering promises of anonymity and safety. The chaos above had driven him to this threshold, a refuge from the horrors that had descended upon the world.
The Crawlers had arrived suddenly, like a plague unleashed from the depths of nightmares. Their origins were a mystery, but their brutality was all too clear. With ruthless efficiency, they hunted, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, striking down and killing anyone unfortunate enough to cross their path.
Mason had heard the terrified whispers of those who had encountered these grotesque creatures. They were a sight to behold-ugly and fearsome. Their heads, egg-shaped and fused with their thoraxes, bore four simple eyes that glimmered with malice. Curved fangs jutted from their maws, promising death with every snap. Movement was a terrifying ballet; two sets of arm-like appendages and four spindly legs propelled them forward. The longer legs carried their weight, while the shorter appendages, resembling small arms, seemed designed for sensing and manipulating their prey. Each leg was covered in tiny, stiff hairs, and wire-like antennae extended from the tops of their heads, quivering as they searched for movement.
Their abdomens, tucked toward the rear, gave them a distinctly reptilian appearance, while their spiny, dark limbs evoked the image of a giant spider ready to ensnare its next victim.
Mason shivered at the thought, but he knew he had to press on. The sewers might be foul and slimy, but they were a sanctuary compared to the relentless horror stalking the streets above.
As he stepped into the darkness, the sounds of bedlam faded behind him, replaced by the unsettling silence of the underground-a silence that held its own dangers, but also the promise of survival.
