Warren Green quits his tech job in California and moves into a cabin in the forest, just outside of Flagstaff, Arizona. He struggles with depression and anxiety as he tries to write a novel. He frequents Pluto's bar and grill where he makes friends with a few questionable bikers, and Sara, the pretty tattooed bartender. She tells Warren that her best friend, a young woman scientist, disappeared from the cabin he's renting. But after months of searching, the police can't find her. Warren also hangs out a the local bookstore where he meets and falls in love with Gail, who teaches writing at the local college. This begins a romance he will do anything to keep alive.
When a body is discovered in the Forbidden Zone, near Grand Canyon national park, the FBI is brought in. They interview Sara who suspects that her boyfriend, a park ranger, may be involved. They interview the bikers from Pluto's whom they suspect may be killers. When they interview Warren, he tells them about two strange people in a black SUV that have come around looking for the dead woman, insisting she has something of theirs.
Eventually, Warren finds a clue to the murder. But there are complications and Warren could be charged with a crime. With the help of the bookstore woman, Gail, he tries to dig his way out of trouble before it's too late, and he loses everything.
