The Hermit of Fishcrescent Island

In the wake of post-Reconstruction America, opportunities for African Americans remain scarce and fraught with challenges. Seeking a chance at adventure and a new beginning, 23-year-old Elijah takes a daring leap by accepting a position as a deckhand on a British merchant ship. His dreams of exploration swiftly turn into a nightmare when a legendary Kraken attacks, leaving Elijah as the sole survivor shipwrecked on the mysterious Fishcrescent Island. Here, he is no longer negro, Black, or African American. He is simply...the Outsider.

Injured and starving, none on the island will vouch to care for Elijah-none except Esmee, the village outcast. At 26 years old, she is even more reclusive than the already reclusive islanders. Yet, despite their stark differences and the island's deep-seated secrets, a bond begins to form between them as Esmee helps Elijah heal. But Esmee may realize too late that she never wants to return to walks on the beach, cove crab hunting, or even sleeping in bed alone again.

Because if the island's ancient and many-armed secret comes to feast on Elijah, then she will remain a hermit forever.
