Unfortunately, Em Kokkino has spent too much time reading the forbidden books in her personal library. She knows that other planets have other styles of leadership. She even knows several illegal spells.

She also knows that if anyone catches on to what she knows, it will be a worse fate than the reeducation camps.
When two of Em's friends are killed for minor acts of defiance, Em and her brother realize the only way for their family to survive is to leave the planet.
