Unconscious Unbound

A collection of automatic, surrealist-inspired illustrations by Australian visual and performance artist, Libert? la Femme. These illustrations were completed as part of an ongoing creative process whereby the artist uses surrealist methods of automatic drawing and meditation to create symbolic rich, dreamlike imagery deeply connected to personal thoughts, experiences, fears and desires. Humorous, challenging, inspiring and often erotic, this body of work began as a stream-of-consciousness journaling exercise where words were replaced with imagery. As a way to explore the hidden layers of the unconscious mind, the intention behind these simple, monochromatic pictorial exercises is founded in the search for a deeper understanding of self. Although highly personal, the illustrations touch on universally shared human experiences, inviting the observer to reinterpret their meanings through their own gaze.
