We believe that beyond the prevalence of social media, the rise of more racy language, and more libertine mores in our society, preadolescence is still shrouded in the same fears, anxieties, dreams, and hopes as it always has been. The context changes, the times change, but for girls and boys of this age, the sense of inadequacy and fear of a changing body remains, as does the cry for help from parents.
As you may have read, the messages preteens leave in their letters are clear: "I want to be like you," "Play
with me more," "Don't yell," "Mom, Dad, don't fight all the time," "I love grandparents," "I like being with you," "Listen to me and trust me," and so on.
We believe that these are wishes to consider: adolescence will soon overwhelm them, and problems that seem insurmountable today will become mountains. But just as there is no one-size-fits-all recipe for every lunch, there is no one-size-fits-all advice for every parent. You must be the one to focus on your preteen children, to let them feel your presence, your encouragement, and your guidance, for you will always be their point of reference as they face the pitfalls of the world.
Know how to be courageous leaders who, when the time is right, will let them go knowing that you have given them all the appropriate tools to deal with life's difficulties and at the same time, the wisdom to know how to enjoy the small moments of happiness.
