Cat's best friend Peter is turning to stone, a magical condition that is both rare and surrounded by controversy. When the pump that moves water through their isolated mountain town suddenly breaks, some of Cat's neighbors blame Peter because Curses are bad luck. Cat doesn't believe in luck, and after this betrayal by her neighbors, she doesn't believe in them either. Cat and Peter take matters into their own hands and try to prove that something other than bad luck is behind the crisis.
