Halloween is usually celebrated on the last Saturday in October, although it was once known as All Hallows' Eve and honored saints in a similar fashion to the celebration of All Saints' Day, which takes place on November 1 every year. In accordance with popular belief, during Samhain, the partitions separating the material world from the spirit realm dissolve, allowing more contact between people and inhabitants of the Otherworld.

trick-or-treating originated from ancient Irish and Scottish customs observed during the evenings before Samhain. Wearing costumes, going door to door, and singing songs to the deceased was known as "mumming" in Ireland. They accepted cakes as payment. Samhain has a similar history to Halloween, however back then, tricks were often attributed to fairies.
