Nisha is a precocious young girl who lives on an island that has been cut off from the rest of the world for generations. Her civilization is ruled by men and dominated by fanatical sun worship. The most important law on the island is that no one is allowed to be out of doors after dusk. The inhabitants are convinced that the night is full of evil forces and that being outside after dusk would offend the sun and cause catastrophe. Nisha distrusts the rulers and the laws. She begins sneaking out of her dwelling at night so that she can lie under the stars. To her, the sun blinds people to the depth of the heavens. No one even knows that the stars exist. The night represents truth, the sun represents lies. Nisha's actions will at some point get her into big trouble, but they will also begin a rebellion against male-dominance, and superstition. The story has a humanist, feminist and LGBTQ slant.
