The Ponderosa is a fictional tale of the survival of a 160-year old ponderosa pine in the Gila wilderness in a remote region of southwestern New Mexico. The Ponderosa is at once an introspective character study and a plot-driven narrative that takes place from the point of view of a ponderosa tree on a steep mountain slope. The story unfolds beginning with an overcrowded stand of trees struggling for survival in the midst of a decade-long drought. The disgruntled protagonist searches first for meaning, and later, for survival while drowning in a sea of self-doubt as they are forced to overcome the many challenges and hardships of life in a precarious environment. The Ponderosa offers readers a first-person view of the rarified life of a middle-aged specimen of the species Pinus ponderosa, cleverly reflecting the human experience of overcoming the traumas of environmental change, overpopulation, post-traumatic stress, and competition for scarce resources.
