The accomplishment of a goal through the direction of human assistants is referred to as leadership. A leader is someone who successfully marshals his human collaborators to achieve specific goals. A great leader is one who can do so in a variety of situations day after day, year after year.
He may not wield or display power, and he may never use force or the threat of harm in his dealings. He may not be popular, and his followers may never do what he wishes for him out of love or admiration. He may never be a colorful individual; he may never employ memorable devices to dramatize the goals of his group or to draw attention to his leadership. In terms of the crucial task of setting goals, he could actually be a man of little skill or influence who acts more as a follower than a leader. For success, leaders need to understand two fundamental principles: People are complicated, and they vary. Humans react to a variety of emotions and desires in addition to the typical carrot and stick, such as ambition,
patriotism, love of the good and the beautiful, boredom, and self-doubt. One person might find fulfillment in solving intellectual puzzles but never have the chance to consider how that fulfillment might be used in business. Another may require a friendly, admiring relationship and be constantly frustrated by his superior's failure to recognize and capitalize on that need.
