An ensuing fight with her guardian, Dolphe, and a chance encounter with Jake, a visiting teenager, sends her seeking the idyllic village life the young man describes. But life among the independent Mer'cans holds an unsuspected danger, one that turns potentially deadly when Dolphe tries to bring her home. It falls to Tourmaline to rescue her rescuer-if she can control her magic.
