One hundred years ago, Rev William Hollowell, Headmaster Calday Grange Grammar School on the Wirral, formed a School Officers' Training Corps. The aim was to give basic military training to young cadets, preparing them to be future leaders. The successor to the unit is the school's Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Contingent which comprises Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force sections.
To commemorate its centenary year, the contingent of 100 cadets paraded at the school in West Kirby on Saturday 19 March 2016. Hosted by Contingent Commander Maj Derek Adcock and Head Teacher Mr Mark Rodaway, the guests - including Her Majesty's Deputy Lieutenant for Merseyside Col Martin Aml?t OBE, the Mayor of Wirral Cllr Les Rowland, and Assistant Commander HQ 42 Inf Bde Col RG Hughes - inspected the assembled troops. A number of families, friends and former cadets were also in attendance.
As part of his address to the assembled parade, Col Aml?t read out a letter on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen that recognised the Contingent's achievement in attaining its hundredth year and its commitment to the core values of the Cadets.
Alongside its own banners, the Contingent was particularly proud to have the honour of bearing the Combined Cadet Force banner, on loan for the occasion from the Cadet Training Centre, Frimley.
This book provides a background history of the establishment, ethos and role of Calday's Army, Navy and Airforce Cadet Sections.
