The Sons of Alasdair: An imaginistory of the McCallisters of America

This narrative is intended to be a kind of biography. Since it is about my ancestors, I suppose it makes it a kind of general autobiography. However, in practice it is more of an act of imagination. I try to imagine how I came to be and what forces might have been influential in shaping me. Of course, my ancestors lived at times and in places that are completely foreign to me and so to tell their stories I must rely on my imagination to try and tie together the tiny bits of supposed facts that exist concerning their lives.
This may sound like an inaccurate and difficult task. Yet in many ways the imagination part comes easily. I have come to believe that what is most personal in my life is also most universal in the lives of others. It would be difficult to prove because what is most personal is what humans generally want most to conceal. But I believe it true. So what I think I might have thought, felt, and done in their situation is what I think they must have thought, felt, and done. Anyway, lacking further documentation it will have to be my way to tell the story.
The years from 1790 until 1850's are bookended by the stately and serious leadership of George Washington and the common man themes of Willima Henry Harrison: "log cabin and hard cider". The followed the degeneration into Civil War which led to a fracturing of so many lives and families, including the McCallister's.
