Social media is the newest fad, and it can be said that it has surpassed main stream media. The laws regarding defamation were enacted before the advent of social media. User-controlled posts in social media represent a new frontier in the media landscape.
As there is minimal or no censorship of information by the operators of these platforms, social media has become a convenient medium for publishing defamatory statements and there is a need to look at how the courts addresses the attendant issues, especially in the Republic of Ghana.
