I was sinking with no sign of rebounding. I had rolled down the driver side window and was now pounding on the outside of the door. Keeping my hand moving like pounding on the door, on my knee, on whatever, seemed to have worked on previous occasions in helping me to maintain consciousness. I had sized up the shoulder earlier; there was no good spot to pull off. Along this stretch of County Road 300 the shoulders banked steeply for rainwater runoff management. I recalled that just past mile marker thirteen there was an adequate space to the right that could accommodate at least three semi-trucks easily. Then, I thought, my turn onto the caliche road--an offroad road known also as a lease road in oil field jargon--leading to the jobsite was under two miles ahead; just past mile marker fourteen. Sure, I could have made it to the caliche road....
